A true junk journal made from items collected around my home in 20 minutes.
Got junk? Make a journal!
Create one today.
A true junk journal challenge
I challenged myself to create a true junk journal by collecting items around my home (and craft room).
No thinking, just grabbing.
My first idea for it was to use a coffee bean mylar bag - I have quite a few collected - sometimes they are too good to throw out and I hadn't found another use for them.
And now I have a great use for them!
The purpose of this journal was to actually make a journal from real junk in my own home especially including items that are paper based but I had never used in a journal before because even I thought it would be ''too junky''.
The result is quite fun and it was surprisingly fun and much easier to make this journal than some others that require a bit more creative consideration.
I made sure not to use too much executive function of my brain - when I do that, the process slows down and my decision making gets overwhelmed.
I loosely gave myself 20 minutes to grab whatever I could that hadn't yet made it into the bin or I never previously thought to use in a junk journal.
Details of what I used listed down below.
And this is what became of my quick challenge to create a true junk journal - from actual junk that even I would throw out.
I did add some of my 'junk journal supplies' from my craft room but ensured to use as much thrifted papers and notions I could - most of the stuff I have is thrifted/from op shops anyway.
Items Curated to Create this Journal
Cover:
emptied Merlo coffee bean mylar bag that probably would have been thrown away eventually
Handmade Bookplate:
Scrap hessian,
vintage lace from a de-stash market,
metallic champagne lame fabric from my high school prom bolero my mother made me (1994, yes I've had leftover fabric for that long) - I add a piece to most of the journals I make,
words from a scrapbook paper pack.
Binding/Closure:
Thrifted thread to bind the pages,
thrifted beads and gems and handmade paper bead,
a 'Good Vibes' brad - thrifted of course,
jute string.
2x Signatures:
Old book pages,
literal junk mail,
magazine pages,
Bunnings catalogue pages and other catalogue pages,
thrifted vintage writing set note papers,
unused index card,
unused and thrifted school lined book paper,
thrifted colouring book pages - I love the "I love Chickens'', makes me giggle,
tea died (by me) papers,
used paper bags,
Sabco peg plastic packaging bag,
paint chips as back cover pockets - thanks Bunnings,
unused thrifted address book pages,
a card - as in one you would gift to another,
photo album pocket pages - these unused photo albums from the op shops are fantastic and make great pocket pages for any journal,
old sheet music papers,
paper doily,
lace,
my own handmade ephemera and much more.
How I plan to use this coffee bag journal?
My original inspiration for this creation was to make a journal from proper junk papers to have a 'demo journal' for when I get myself to the local art and craft markets as a seller - to show people what a true junk journal can be.
I'll also use it as an 'journal page and ephemera ideas journal' - to keep a record of all the types of idea's I use or want to use and remember in a journal - there are so many ideas and inspirations I can no longer remember them all in my head. Like a recipe book for your favourite recipes.
Junk isn't really junk when you curate and collate and turn it into a fun book/journal/notebook.
Have you made a junk journal yet?
See what you have around the house and create!
